Salou has remembered the figure of King Jaume I on the 750th anniversary of his death. The main event gathered residents and authorities for a floral offering next to the monument dedicated to the Conqueror, which was erected in 1960. In this way, tribute was paid to the monarch who chose the port of Salou as the starting point for the conquest of Mallorca in 1229.
During the morning, the mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, and the councillor for Culture, Júlia Gómez, visited the Monastery of Poblet, where the monarch's tomb is located, to pay him tribute with an initial floral offering. In the evening, the homage moved to Passeig Jaume I. During the official ceremony, “El cant dels ocells” (The Song of the Birds) was performed, and a reading was given from the "Llibre dels Feyts" (Book of Deeds), which is the chronicle of King Jaume's reign narrated by himself.
In addition to the institutional speeches, a commemorative plaque was unveiled, and medieval chronicles were recalled by councillor Júlia Gómez and historian Jordi Sardiña, accompanied on the cello by Jenia Kobylyanska. The performance by the giants of Salou, who precisely represent King Jaume I, brought the commemorative event to a close.
