What to do? Visit the Civil War Defence Spaces Route

Po-roig machine gun nest or bunker. Provided.

Salou. Costa Dorada. 01 April 2026.
Salou takes a major step in preserving its local history with the launch of the Civil War Defense Sites Route. This new itinerary invites you to explore the machine gun nests (bunkers) of Po-roig, the defensive positions at Punta del Cavall, and the artillery batteries of La Glorieta and La Talaia.

The project features the opening of the Po-roig bunkers to the public, offering guided tours, informative panels, and digital resources like audio guides to enhance your visit.

The Hidden Treasures of Punta de Po-roig

The bunkers at Punta de Po-roig have been remarkably preserved after being hidden beneath a public square since the 1970s. This accidental protection prevented erosion, leaving the original structure intact—including underground galleries, interior chambers, and two sea-facing firing positions.

With the support of the Spanish Ministry of Defense, the site will be staged with authentic historical pieces. This recreation offers a powerful educational experience, showing what life and defense were like during the conflict.

Why were these bunkers built in Salou?

During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), the Republican government and the Generalitat of Catalonia fortified the coastline to defend against potential naval attacks by Francoist troops or the Italian and German navies.

Salou’s geography was strategically vital. Cap Salou, rising over an open bay, served as a privileged vantage point over the entire Gulf of Sant Jordi. These fortifications were essential not only to repel landings and food blockades but also to monitor Italian aircraft launched from Mallorca, which frequently bombed the coast and inland cities.

History Meets Nature

Thanks to the local terrain, most of these bunkers remain in excellent condition. Following the Coastal Path (Camí de Costa) is the perfect way to explore these sites while enjoying Salou’s stunning natural beauty.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to recover historical memory while trekking along the Mediterranean—a must-do activity during your stay in Salou!
