Advice for consumers and companies in the face of the effects of COVID 19

Salou. Costa Dorada. 05 April 2020. Spain has been in alarm for the COVID 19 since last March 15, 2020. This situation has meant the application of measures such as the closure of:

• hotel establishments
• campsites and other tourist accommodation
• restaurants (bars, cafes, restaurants). Only those that offer home delivery work
• venues for shows and sports, artistic and leisure facilities
• companies of all kinds except those that offer essential services (food and hygiene products, health, social services, police, waste collection)
• and the considerable reduction of air, rail, sea and road transport

These measures directly affect consumers in aspects related to the suspension of these services. For this reason, the Catalan Consumer Agency informs about the rights that consumers and companies have in these situations.

Likewise, the Catalan Consumer Agency also recommends that, despite having the right to recover money for services not provided, we should bear in mind that this situation also affects many companies that are suffering from a lack of liquidity at this time of crisis. In these cases, our solidarity as consumers may consist of accepting reasonable alternatives, such as providing the service later or offering future discounts, instead of refunding the money.

In addition, the Catalan Consumer Agency calls for responsible and solidary consumption and recommends planning purchases, buying only what is necessary and not accumulating products.

The aspects to take into account in our acts of consumption are the following in relation to:

• Travel and transportation
• Shows and other events
• Services of successive tract or that are paid by fees (courses, gyms, etc.)
• Payments made in advance as a down payment
• Return of products

Finally, it is advisable to only inform yourself through official channels and follow the recommendations of the health and government authorities.
